Insight is a personal self-analysis app made by Frank Barrett. It gathers a number of signals
about your daily behavior and combines them into a daily ranking measured against your own goals
(for example: sobriety, movement, productivity, eating, strength, and saving). This policy
explains what data the app uses, why, where it goes, and the choices you have.
Data the app uses
Apple Health (HealthKit) — body weight, steps, active energy, walking/running
distance and workouts, resting heart rate, blood pressure, and sleep. Read only; used to score the
movement and health parts of your day. Insight does not write to Health except, optionally, body
weight you choose to log.
Location — your approximate location is used to tell whether you are at home,
at work, or out, so nudges fit where you actually are. It may be checked in the background for this
purpose. Location is not stored as a history or shared.
Apple Wallet spending (FinanceKit) — only if you explicitly connect it. Insight
reads the amount and date of your Apple Card / Apple Cash / Apple Wallet transactions
(including ATM/cash withdrawals) to include spending in your daily ranking. It does not read card
numbers, account numbers, or merchant identities beyond what is needed for this summary, and it
never moves money.
Things you log yourself — substances, strength-training sets, daily check-ins,
and meals (free text). These are entered by you.
Notification token & basic diagnostics — an Apple Push Notification token so
the app can send you nudges, plus lightweight diagnostic events to help the app run reliably.
How your data is used
To compute your daily ranking and the breakdown behind it.
To generate nudges and reminders tailored to your goals and context.
Meal text you log is sent to Anthropic’s API (Claude) to estimate calories, which
feed the “clean eating” part of your score.
Your data is not sold, rented, or used for advertising.
Where your data is stored and who processes it
On your device — most data lives locally on your iPhone and Mac.
The Insight “hub” — a private server operated solely by the developer
(Frank Barrett) on DigitalOcean. The app sends your logged data and health/spending summaries to it
over an authenticated, encrypted (HTTPS) connection so it can compute and serve your score and a
personal dashboard.
Apple — HealthKit, FinanceKit, and the Apple Push Notification service, governed
by Apple’s Privacy Policy.
Anthropic — receives only the meal text you log, for calorie estimation, governed
by Anthropic’s Privacy Policy.
Insight is a single-user personal app; data is associated with you, the operator, and is not
aggregated with or shared between other users.
Your choices
You grant Health, Location, and Apple Wallet access explicitly, and can revoke any of them at any
time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security. Revoking simply stops Insight from
reading that source.
You can delete logged entries in the app, and request deletion of data held by the hub by
contacting the address below.
Notifications can be turned off in iOS Settings.
Data retention & security
Data is retained until you delete it or request its deletion. Connections to the hub are encrypted in
transit (TLS) and authenticated with a private token; the hub is access-controlled by the developer.
Children
Insight is not directed to children and is not intended for use by anyone under 13.
